Our Lady of Sorrows, the Sorrowful Mother or Mother of Sorrows, and Our Lady of Piety, Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows or Our Lady of the Seven Dolours are names by which the Blessed Virgin Mary is referred to in relation to sorrows in her life. As Mater Dolorosa, it is also a key subject for Marian art in the Catholic Church

There are many titles to describe the suffering of the Blessed Mother. The seven sorrows are seen as an expansion of the five Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, and the first (Mary accepts in faith the prophecy of Simeon) began when Simeon beheld the Infant Jesus in the Temple and prophesied to Mary,:...(Luke 2:35). The remaining six are: Mary flees into Egypt with Jesus and Joseph, Mary seeks Jesus lost in Jerusalem, Mary meets Jesus on the way to Calvary. Mary stands near the Cross of her Son, Death and Resurrection of Jesus, Mary receives the body of Jesus taken down from the cross, and Mary places the body of Jesus in the tomb, awaiting the Resurrection.
Various hymns and prayers refer to Mary as the Sorrowful Mother. One, the Stabat Mater Dolorosa ("The Sorrowful Mother Stood"), a 13th century hymn to Mary, captures Mary distress at the Crucifixion: "At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful Mother weeping."
Through Mary's sadness, the faithful are able to draw closer to the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus, and to find comfort in offering up their own suffering to God.

O most compassionate Mother, what bitterness filled your heart when you embraced the lacerated Body of your Son with your virginal arms, pressed him lovingly to your maternal heart, and covered Him with tender kisses. I remind you of your inexpressible sorrow, and in virtue of it. I beseech you to intercede for me for the forgiveness of my sins.
O Mary, my hope, have pity of me. Pray for me, a poor sinner. Carrying the wounded Body of your Son Jesus, offer Him in this condition to the Heavenly Father for me. Offer His pierced Heart, His Passion and death, and your immeasurable sorrows to obtain grace and mercy for me, particularly for (mention your request).
Holy Mother, pierced through, intercede for me with my Saviour crucified. Amen.
